ARCHIVE CD BOOKS CANADA NEWS AND LATEST RELEASES
Recently released important Canadian books:
Canada as a National Property, 1926
CA0032; $26.00
This is an excellent book if you want to get a feel for Canada in the
mid 1920s. It clearly is doing a "sales" job and so doesn't discuss the
less attractive conditions but on the whole it's a fairly accurate
picture of what a settler and his family could expect to find if they
decided to take the opportunity to start a new life in the new world.
Canadian Civil Service Lists: Quebec-1853, Canada-1872 & 1894
There are hundreds of Civil Servants listed in these reports and the
largest, the 1894 report includes an alphabetical index. From this I
have extracted the surnames (given names are included in the original).
You can find this list of names under the More information link
in the
description of this book on our <www.archivecdbooks.ca> web site
If an ancestor was working for the Canadian or Quebec governments in
these periods they are going to be listed here.
Hand Book for the Dominion of Canada, 1884
CA0028: $23.00
The book is a mine of information about the Canada of the period,
organized into what today would be info-bites and
factoids. Topics
discussed range as widely as politics and geology, music and the cost of
public works. There is a lot of attention paid to means of transport and
in particular to the railway system. A great prize to railway
enthusiasts will be the 3 fold out maps showing the railway routes
across Canada and the upper portions of the USA.
The Annual Reports of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Hamilton,
Ontario., 1905 to 1939
CA0025: $35.00
An almost unbroken series of annual reports of this major church in
Canada's steel city. Each report contains a Pew List
and almost all
contain the Sunday School List which contain the names and addresses
of all the parishioners and their children. There are thousands of
names in these reports and our text search will allow to quickly find
your ancestors.
The Blue Book: Textile Directory US & Canada 1897-98
CA0033: $23.00
This is a comprehensive directory of the textile trade and associated
manufacturing industries for the years 1897 and 1897. It lists all
manufacturing operations in the whole of Canada and the United States.
To round out the directory there is a section listing 1144 railroad
routes, followed by 17 pages of maps showing all the US railroad routes
and the business districts of selected cities important to the textile
trade.
The Greystone 1928
CA0036: $28.00
The year book for the University of Saskatchewan for the year 1928.
Photographs of all the graduates and many of the sports teams and other
campus societies. If you are looking for someone who attended this
university at this time there's a very good chance you're going to find
them in this book
The Hub and the Spokes - The Capital and its Environs
CA0001: $28.00
The author, Aston Guard, set out to educate his fellow Americans to the
presence of Canada. In the process he produced an invaluable resource
for anyone researching Ottawa at the turn of the (last) century.
Wonderfully written in a readable, Mark Twain'ish, style this book is
full of descriptions of Ottawa and other places in the valley.
Best of
all it is simply jam packed with the names of every person who Aston met
while he lived in the city. As if that wasn't enough there are hundreds
of contemporary photographs and engravings of people and places in and
around Ottawa.
Pathfinders of the West, 1907
CA0029: $13.00
A historically accurate story of the earliest explorers of the vast area
between the Great Lakes and the Pacific Ocean. Read about the
experiences these early pathfinders had, the hardship, the danger, their
relationships with the 1st Nations peoples, and their discoveries. And
when they returned home, of the scheming and politics of the early
administrations. An insight into the early fur trade and the workings
of the Hudson's Bay company. The search for the North-West passage.
Encounters with the Inuit. A true flavor of the early pathfinder.
Thrilling Experiences in the War in South Africa - 1900
CA0011: $28.00
A terrific book for anyone wanting to get the flavor and background of
the Boer war without having to read through a more conventional
"history." While reporting the war from beginning to end, this book pays
particular attention to the contribution made by the Canadian forces.
Altogether there are over 500 illustrations, including a gallery of over
160 pictures at the end of the book, giving a real insight to what life
during the war was like for both sides.
History of the Eastern Township of Quebec - 1869
CA0056: $23.00
An early history of Canada and more specifically of the important area
of Quebec just to the South East of Montreal known as the Eastern
Townships. In the third part of the book, about half of its 475 pages,
there is a detailed account of the formation of each of the Eastern
Townships villages and the names of many of the individuals and families
instrumental in their early development is given in full.
Coming soon:
A lovely book about Cape Breton, one of the earliest settled areas of
Canada. A fund of detailed history and wonderful 100 yr. old
photographs.
Also in production is an enormous 1930 Gazetteer of the whole of Canada.
A major project this!
We are working from a bookshelf of what is now almost 100 interesting
history and genealogy books as a result of our purchases at an auction
of many hundreds of old and rare books.

1841 CENSUS PROJECTS
Seen on one of the mailing lists:
>Dear list,
>
>I have just bought the 1841 census for Essex on CDs, and though it came
>with a warning that some pages were illegible, I crossed my fingers
>that they wouldn't be the very ones that I needed.
>
>Alas, some of the pages for Great Coggeshall are virtually blank. Does
>anyone know if any older microfilms or fiches (or transcripts) exist,
>where these pages might still be legible?
They are indeed legible on the films. Archive CD Books now has a
delivery of the 1841 Essex census films from the National Archives, and
a set of CDs for Essex 1841 will be released soon, during May. (What a
pity that you didn't wait for those).
Yes... 1841 census pages are feint and hard to read. Notoriously so! And
they are indeed difficult to scan. But I have put some sample scans from
those Essex 1841 pages on a web page for you to look at.
http://www.british-genealogy.com/resources/census/samples/1841ess1.html
Is that better?
The samples include the *worst* page I could find on that film!
Can you read it?
It is a scan by Archive CD Books. Compare it with others that you have
seen. Where would you purchase your 1841 census CDs from in future?
On that same web page is a link to download a PDF file with two whole
pages. One normal page, and one that was the worst page I could find in
that film). Tell us what you think of the *bad* one! Compare it with the
same page that you already have seen.
The 1841 Essex census CDs from Archive CD Books will be released during
May. They are available to advance order now at:
http://www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/ess-census.html
GBP 30.00 - (GBP 35.25 incl. VAT on sales to UK addresses)
(and 15% discount on those prices to Archive CD Books Sponsors)
And finally... Archive CD Books are in the process of producing the 1841
census for *every* county in England and Wales. Because I can do them
well.
==============
I can tell you the plan, but I don't guess what I can or can't do for
dates.
I am covering the following counties:
1. completed and released
2. imminent release
3. films here waiting to be scanned
4. films on order from the PRO
Eastern Counties South West
(both East & SW. concurrently)
Cornwall [1]
Lincolnshire [2] Gloucestershire [2]
Norfolk [3] Devon [3]
Suffolk [3] Somerset [4]
Essex [3] Dorset [4]
Cambridgeshire [3] Wiltshire [4]
Hampshire [4]
I would like to think that those will be completed within a few weeks.
Most are already available for advance ordering.
Then I will move northwards from Gloucestershire:
Worcestershire [4]
Herefordshire [4]
Warwickshire [4]
Staffordshire [4]
Cheshire [4]
Derbyshire [4]
Nottinghamshire [4]
Leicestershire [4]
Rutland [4]
Thus closing the loop back round to Lincolnshire.
After completing the above, that leaves three options where to go next:
A.
Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire,
Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire
sitting in the middle, untouched as yet.
B.
The South East counties of Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Middlesex
(Middlesex in smaller district sets from GBP 5.99)
C.
Shropshire,
Lancashire, Yorkshire, and other northern counties
(Yorkshire and Lancashire in smaller district sets from GBP 5.99)
I haven't yet made my mind up which option first.
What about Wales? Those will follow later in the plan, with the probable
exception of Glamorgan, which will be fitted in sooner. I would like to
see *all* of the 1841 census completed *well before* the end of this
year.
We scan the films ourselves. It is the only way to ensure the quality,
and besides which, we have extra equipment and image enhancement
techniques that makes the images as good as they are. And... we check
every single image... three times. And re-scan pages if necessary, or
apply different image enhancement settings. We *never* just scan a film
and then bang it onto a CD.
If there ends up being an "impossible" image, and they are *very* rare
on the 1841, then I know that we did our very best. I am not going to
promise that I can make something from a virtually white image, or
totally black image on film, but those feint pages of the 1841 census
*will* be readable on the Archive CD Books CDs.
I am at this moment looking at acquiring a second film scanner, and
employing at least one (if not two) new team members, so that throughput
can be doubled. I would like to see all of the above censuses completed
by this summer, (bearing in mind that we are also scanning some 1861,
1871 and 1881 too during this period - those are easy, as faster to
scan).
I am not at all concerned if other producers have either published their
census CDs already, or are about to do so. I have total confidence that
our scanned images will be impossible to beat for quality. My only
regret is that I didn't announce my intentions for the 1841 census
earlier so that people didn't have to be disappointed with what they
have already obtained.
So, if you are prepared to wait a little while, then you will be assured
of the very best possible quality scans, just like those for the
Cornwall 1841, and those that you have just seen on our web page for the
Essex 1841. If you cannot wait a few months, then by all means purchase
them elsewhere. If other producers rush theirs out for those counties in
the meantime, (or have already produced them) then so be it. I am
dedicated to releasing ours as the best possible quality product. I am
totally convinced that I can.
I'll leave you with this thought regarding the 1841 census images. When
we released the 1841 Cornwall, we had people writing to us telling us
that the images on our CDs were *better* than the films that they had
seen. That they found ancestors easily that they had missed entirely
when looking at the thin films. In addition, the Cornwall Family History
Society are *re-doing* their index of the 1841 census, from our CDs, to
fill in all the gaps that they couldn't read previously, and to check
all of them again.
That.... is how good our 1841 censuses are.
Will you wait for ours to be released?

FAVOURITES FROM THE "GENERAL" SECTIONS OF THE CATALOGUE
Yes... with so many CDs to choose from, it is understandable to dive
straight for the county sections of the catalogue, and miss out on the
juicy books in the "General" sections.
Some of my personal favourites from the "General" sections of the
catalogue:
http://www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/all-britain.html
** Gazetteer of Great Britain & Ireland - Cassell 1898
(Reference #0168)
Descriptions of every town, village and hamlet in the whole of Great
Britain and Ireland. Excellent maps. 4 CD set
** Evidence on the Employment of Children - 1842(Reference #1068)
This huge volume of 1842, reproduced as a facsimile copy on CD, is a
government publication containing evidence on the employment of
children. Evidence is stated by means of interviews with the employers,
adult workers and children, relating to the work and life style
conditions of the children.
Almost 900 pages of testimonies and interviews, covering various types
of factories and work in a wide variety of places in Britain.
An amazing and fascinating insight into conditions of work and peoples'
lifestyle in 1842 in their own words. Did your ancestor work in a
factory? Put meat on the bare bones of your family history by
understanding how they lived and worked.
** Camden's Britannia 1588 (Reference #0291)
Translation and edition of 1722 by Gibson, complete with all of the 1695
maps by Robert Morden. This is the definitive early history and
description of the whole of Britain. An absolute must for anyone's
collection. Two immense and extremely rare volumes, worth thousands of
pounds, and yours on CD for just £17.75.
These books are not dry! They give wonderful accounts of the places,
their history and geography, lifestyle of the people at the time, etc.
and provide invaluable background information for your family history
research.

** The Complete Parish Officer 1772 (Reference #0766)
This is one of the most important resources that we have seen, and one
that should be of great interest to all family historians. Published in
1772 it was the handbook of the duties and responsibilities of the
Parish Officer.
It includes the duties of the overseers of the poor, the power in
relieving, employing and settling, etc. of poor persons; the laws
relating to the poor, and settlements, and the statutes concerning
masters and servants. The right of Settlement was something that was of
great concern to all of our ancestors. Basically, to be able to have
right of settlement in a parish, one had to be born there, married there
or serving an apprenticeship there. Proof was all-important, especially
if a person became destitute and needed support from the parish. Parish
officers would have people literally evicted and transported to another
parish under such circumstances. What happened about bastardy? What
obligations does an apprentice have to his master and vice-versa? This
book describes it all, together with the supporting laws.
Other sections of the book include the authority and duty of constables,
tithingmen, etc.; churchwardens, how they should be chosen, their
duties, church accounts, repairing of churches, etc. There are some very
interesting punishments for not attending church and keeping to the
rules! There is a section on surveying the highways, Scavengers, methods
of taxation of the highways, and laws. And finally, the duties and
powers of Watchmen.
** Parish Register Extracts 1831(Reference #1072)
In 1831 an Act of Parliament was passed "for taking an account of the
population of Great Britain, and of the increase or dimunition thereof".
A survey was taken of the England, Wales and the offshore islands
(excluding Scotland and Ireland) of all parish registers to count the
number of baptisms, marriages and burials from the year 1821 to 1830.
The government then published the results of this survey in 1833
This rare book contains the results for each county:
+ Tables of the number of baptisms, marriages and burials (male and
female) in each district (hundred).
+ Lists of pre 1813 registers in each parish (with dates of the
registers)
+ Chart with the county summary of baptisms, marriages and burials
+ Ages of the persons buried in the county (1813 to 1830) (Deaths by
age)
+ Table of mortality rates (living & died, male and female and by
percentage)
+ Proportion of burials to the population ((1801 to 1830)
+ Report on increase in population 1801-1811, 1811-1821, 1821-1831
+ County map with population figures and baptism, marriage, burial
numbers (1801, 1811, 1821 & 1831) for each district (hundred).
There is also a fascinating report on the number and proportion of
illegitimate children in 1830. Radnor featuring worst with one in seven
births being illegitimate (100), Pembrokeshire 1 in 8 (210), Glamorgan 1
in 10 (275); and at the other end of the scale, Middlesex with 1 in 38
(905) being illegitimate.
This excellent book of 500 large format pages will be of immense
interest to genealogists and historians, especially those studying the
development of the population of England and Wales during the early part
of the 1800s.

** The Popular History of England (Reference #0478)
THE POPULAR HISTORY OF ENGLAND - AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF SOCIETY AND
GOVERNMENT FROM THE EARLIEST PERIOD TO OUR OWN TIMES
by Charles Knight 1856/1862
This 8 volume set is not dated but these are the first editions which
took Charles Knight (1791 - 1873 ) 6 years to complete.
With detailed information from B.C. 55 to 1867, and 66 full page steel
engravings plus over 1,000 in text illustrations these volumes will give
endless hours of absorbing reading.
A comment from Charles Knight in the preface states: I have to observe,
that the wood engravings have been selected by me, not as mere
embellishments but as illustrations of the text. They will have the
advantage, in many cases of presenting a more vivid description, of
localities, of monumental remains, of costume, of works of industry and
art, of popular amusements; and, in connection with portraits of
sovereigns engraved on steel, of remarkable persons, in civil, military,
ecclesiastical, and military history.
Each volume has title page, over 4,000 pages in total, plus 66 full page
and about 1,000 in text illustrations and a double page plan: London and
part of the suburbs after the Great Fire in 1666.
** Old England, A Museum of Popular Antiquities (Reference #0477)
Charles Knight. (undated, about 1860)
These two huge books are absolutely superb. Each contains several
volumes, with a topical approach to life, people, places, architecture
and fashions, etc. in England from Roman times through to 1860. The
author has collected thousands of old engravings to illustrate the work.
A double page of text, followed by a double page of illustrations
throughout the volumes.
Use the illustrations to compliment your genealogy or family history
work. Understand what life was really like in old England.

In particular, after about 1750, it is full of references to every-day

AUTOMATION OF ORDER PROCESSING
We have now improved out on-line ordering system, so that it is almost
seamless from the time that you place an order on the on-line catalogue.
As you know, we publish the CDs on demand... they are made to meet your
order the same day. Your order on-line now triggers the making of the
CDs that you order!
In addition, when you type in your name and address details, you are
creating your own invoice *and* you are even creating your own address
label for the packet.
Can you see how important it is, therefore, to type correctly on the
order form? Unfortunately, many people are not. Over 50% of orders
received have names and addresses in all lower case letters, even
including a postal code! For example if typing in all lower case...
GL11 1LL comes out on an address label as "gl111ll" .... useful to the
post office? No. Not very!

to you. Please type correctly on the on-line order form.

OTHER NEWS SNIPPETS
Thanks to the Genealogical Society of Victoria and the Society of
Australian Genealogist for assisting by supplying books recently for
scanning by Archive CD Books Australia.
Something to look forwards to for the future. We have obtained
permission to scan all of the "Settlement Examinations" held by the City
of Westminster Archives. This is an immense collection of documents
which will be of major importance to those with ancestors in the London
area. Absolutely superb!
Those visiting the SoG Fair in London this weekend will be able to see
the whole range of Archive CD Books CDs. Mike Portlock, "Back to Roots"
is representing us there with the Archive CD Books display, together
with some very special show offers too!
Many family History Societies now have stocks of our CDs for their
county. Watch out for them too at the SoG Fair this weekend.
This month we have supplied copies of many of our CDs relating to their
county *free* to various family history societies for use by members in
their research rooms. Many family history societies are sending out
special Archive CD Books Vouchers (in their newsletters) to their
members, to give them special offers on selected CDs, including some
great CDs for just a fraction of the normal price. One of the advantages
of belonging to a local family history society!
My trip to Dublin a couple of weeks ago was extremely successful. We are
now to have an Archive CD Books Ireland! I must now concentrate on
getting things moving for New Zealand and South Africa... the delay has
been entirely down to me! I have been so busy lately. There is also now
developments with an Archive CD Books Germany, with access to many
superb original records. (Many of them we have already scanned!) Watch
this space!
