Archive CD Books News : April 1 2004

It has been a few weeks since I last posted an Archive CD Books News. My

apologies! But that is due to being so busy and also my self enforced

computer-free "sanity preserving" vacation. It was wonderful ;-)

So this News is a particularly long one... to catch up with all of the

interesting things that have been happening.

In this news:

* Latest CD Releases

* Census project news

* Changes to the on-line catalogue

* Special Offers

* Archive CD Books Canada, USA, Australia and Nederlands

* Other snippets.

have completed their apprenticeship), together with their addresses.

LONDON 1871 CENSUS

SOME NEW RELEASES AND...

SOME PRICE REDUCTIONS!

http://www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/lnd-census.html

Very high quality scans of the original census enumerators' books on CD

for viewing using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Zoom right in to see the detail.

Print high quality pages.

The 1871 London Census project is now well under way, and has all been

scanned.

Rather than releasing it as one huge big set of CDs, I am dividing it

into smaller more affordable districts. With one or two or three CDs for

each, priced at GBP 8.50, 10.00 or 11.50. I feel that this is much more

practical than purchasing a huge set of CDs where only a few would be

needed for your research. In fact, at these prices, one could consider

them not only as research tools, but simply a method of obtaining

inexpensive prints for the pages that you need!

I'll make a point of listing the places covered in each district set on

the on-line catalogue, where you will see a button marked "More..." to

show the additional details.

OTHER CENSUSES

1861 CENSUS

As announced in December, we have now stepped up throughput of the

previously announced 1861 censuses for which we have already accepted

advance orders. I appreciate that some of these have been quite some

time on the waiting list (mainly due to the way that we handle the cash

flow for the project) and I thank you for your patience. The remainder

of the pre-announced 1861 counties will be released within the next four

or five months.

1861 Kent and 1861 Sussex

These census releases have been delayed for a few weeks. I was not at

all happy with the quality of the films provided, and were not able to

scan consistently to the high quality that we now expect, and which we

have set as our standard. Apologies for the delay, but we are sure that

you would prefer to wait until we obtain a different set of films and

produce a better quality product.

1841 CENSUS

Films have arrived here for:

1841 Lincolnshire

1841 Gloucestershire

These will be scanned within the next week, using our special scanner

and image enhancement techniques. Our 1841 scans are second to none!

Films for several more county censuses are already on order. These

include:

RG9/985-1015 Bedfordshire 1861

HO107/63-88 Cambridgeshire 1841

RG9/1016-1053 Cambridgeshire 1861

HO107/200-276 Devon 1841

HO107/322-345 Essex 1841

RG9/462-556 Kent 1861 (replacement films)

RG10/1303-1348 Middlesex 1871

HO107/753-794 Norfolk 1841

HO107/1011-1044 Suffolk 1841

RG10/795-871 Surrey 1871

RG9/557-630 Sussex 1861 (replacement films)

More films will be ordered this week. In particular we'll be

concentrating on the remaining 1861's that were announced in phase 1

1861 Cheshire Census Registration Districts

1861 Hampshire Census Registration Districts

1861 Northumberland Census Registration Districts

1861 Warwickshire Census Registration Districts

Then *ALL* of the 1841 censuses, and another batch of 1871

The film scanner is now working flat out, with plenty of films in

stocks, and two extra people doing work on the censuses full time.

CHANGES TO THE ON-LINE CATALOGUE

1. CHECKOUT

The shopping cart has always used 128 bit encryption based on java.

That's just about as secure as you can get. However.... a (very) few

number of people who bought IE6 or Windows during a period of a few

months last year didn't have java, because Microsoft fell out with Sun

Microsystems.... then made friends again, and started to include it

again. Those people can't checkout on the shopping cart. (Unless they

download the free java plugin).

So... as we do still get the occasional person mentioning it.... I am

changing the card entry screen over to SSL instead... later this week.

No Java... different credit card screen.

2. CATALOGUE RESTRUCTURE

The Archive CD Books on-line catalogue pages of the web site have been

updated. There has been quite a lot of re-structuring to make them a

little more logical, and with easier web page addresses (URLs). The old

web page addresses created by the shopping cart software were long and

pretty unfriendly!

The new ones take the following format...

For example:

The London section is now:

http://www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/lnd.html

with sub sections:

Census:

http://www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/lnd-census.html

Church Records:

http://www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/lnd-church.html

Directories:

http://www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/lnd-directories.html

History & Topography :

http://www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/lnd-history.html

You will notice that the census projects have been moved to a folder

within their relevant county.

The site map is the easiest way to use the catalogue:

http://www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/sitemap.html

3. ORDER PROCESSING

During the next week, we shall be changing our internal order processing

procedures to make them faster and much more efficient. The essential

difference will be that the process will enable Cathy and Dorothy to be

less busy! At the same time, the CD shortfalls (we make CDs daily on

demand to match the orders) will be done faster, and hence completed CDs

will go to the packing and mail room faster.

Archive CD Books Canada, USA, Australia and Nederlands

These sites are now well and truly boiling ;-)

Lots of new CDs of their own country's resources, and many more books

being scanned. Canadian customers will be especially pleased, as they

can now order from within Canada, and not be subjected to the

unreasonable import duties imposed.

All CDs, from all countries, are available from any country's shopping

cart (although there will always be a slight delay while new master CDs

are sent between us). Nederlands is the exception at the moment, as it

just sells its own CDs, but that will change in the near future). They

have lots of great books that will be of special interest to those in

the USA and South Africa who have Dutch ancestors! (But the books are in

Dutch of course!)

AUSTRALIA http://www.archivecdbooks.com.au

NEDERLAND http://www.boekopcd.nl

USA http://www.archivecdbooks.us

CANADA http://www.archivecdbooks.ca

Please note: special offers that are made available in one country's

Archive CD Books are not usually available in the others. Each Archive

CD Books will do offers on its own generated products.

ARCHIVE CD BOOKS AUSTRALIA

From Stephen Phillips - Australia:

Archive CD Books Australia is now underway with our own Bookeye scanner

(our initial products were scanned in England). We have taken to trip to

England for training (and a healthy dose ribbing about a recent Rugby

loss) to ensure our quality is up to Archives CD Books high standard.

{RN: we made them sit for a few hours being trained by Sarah, with a

large poster of Johnny Wilkinson on the wall in front of them <grin>)

We are now in a position to step up our schedule of Australian products.

Take a look at our interesting schedule for the next few months - we

hope to add more.

For a preview of coming products visit our Recent & Coming titles page

(accessible from the coming titles link on our home page)

NEW SOUTH WALES TELEPHONE EXCHANGES LIST OF SUBSCRIBERS 1913

F. Hutchinson - 608 pages - $39.50

This early telephone directory of New South Wales was issued in May

1913. It lists over 30,000 names of subscribers in Sydney and country

NSW in over 600 pages. Unlike modern phone directories occupations are

often given along with the address and the exchange.

The preliminary pages include other information giving insight into

communications and society nearly 100 years ago.

NEW SOUTH WALES PUBLIC SERVICE LIST (TEACHERS) 1925 108 pages - $25.00

Being a List of Teachers permanently employed in High, Intermediate

High, and Primary Schools on the 31st December 1925, arranged in

alphabetical order.

A listing of over 8000 teachers at schools throughout New South Wales at

the end of 1925, giving the following comprehensive details:

- Surname

- Christian Name in full

- Classification of teacher

- Date of Birth

- Date of first appointment

- Position and School

- Salary

- Deductions from gross Salary for use of residence - Living Allowance

The last five pages give a summary of number of teachers arranged by

classification, along with the salary at each level.

The main teacher list is arranged alphabetically by teacher name.

However the searchable text will be very useful to anyone researching

local history or school history to easily identify teachers from schools

in their area.

OTHER NEWS SNIPPETS

New Staff:

Three new members of staff have joined the team recently:

Brian - on film scanning and census scan checking

Chris - on scanning more books

Fuzzy - to help Kim with the CD packing and mailing

The house next door:

We are outgrowing ourselves again! Especially in the scanning, CD

making, and packing and mailing areas. So I am looking at buying the

house next door (joined on) to the Archive CD Books office. If it comes

off, then my wife and I will be buying it from personal funds, plus a

mortgage (as an investment), but then putting some of the Archive CD

Books overflow work into it.

New network server:

Our tired old Compaq network server is really no longer up to the

demands that we put on it. This week we'll be getting a new one.

Another book scanner:

We have ordered another of the Bookeye book scanners from Germany. This

time one of the superb A2 *colour* scanners.

Books are still coming in:

The supply of really good books doesn't let up. We have had lots more

recently, some that I have purchased from dealers, and many more loaned

by private individuals, record offices and local studied libraries

around England, and we are just in the process of setting up an

arrangement with a major Scottish library too!

Broadband finally comes to Cinderford:

I never thought it would happen out here in the backwoods of the Forest

of Dean, Gloucestershire, but finally we are to get ADSL.

Visit to Ireland:

On April 17th I shall be making a trip to Dublin.... Archive CD Books

Ireland is starting to get under way! This will be a really exciting

venture, with access to some superb Irish records and resources.

Best Regards

Rod
