outstanding orders for films for 14 more counties, (paid for in advance,

which is tying up considerable funds).

I regret that other than those listed above, which will be released

within the next few weeks, I am unable to give firm release dates for

any others for which people have placed advance orders. Thank you for

your continued patience.

WAYS THAT DIRECTORIES CAN BE USED

A new web page on the British-Genealogy site that uses some examples

from a directory (Wright's 1902 Nottingham) to illustrate a few ways in

which directories can be used for research, and to build up a picture of

the neighbourhood in which they lived..

It also clearly explodes the myth that directories only contained

businesses, and that people had to pay to be included. They didn't!

NEW - ADOPT-A-BOOK SCHEME

Museums, local studies libraries, etc. often have very rare and old

books that we'd all like to see. Unfortunately, those books are so rare

and valuable, and often in such poor condition, that they are not out on

open shelves for the public. Money to renovate them is hard to come by.

In addition, we often see old books for sale at book dealers that really

should have a home with those museums and local studies libraries,

record offices, etc. But they disappear into private collections. Our

"Adopt A Book" scheme solves those problems.

It works like this:

* A book comes to us from a local studies library, museum or

record office, or we purchase it from a book dealer.

* We scan it and make it available on CD

* The book on CD is then accessible to anyone

* The museum gets a copy on CD

* But then we go a step further:

The book is renovated before being returned to the museum We have a few

(usually 3 or 4 copies only) of the book specially printed as a

facsimile copy. The facsimile copy has an extra preface page that

describes the Archive CD Books Project, and also names the person or

people who adopted the book.

* A copy goes to the museum or library where it can be used

by the public. (The original valuable old one can now go

into preservation).

* A copy of the facsimile book goes to the person or people

who adopted the book. (plus a copy of the CD too).

Who pays for all of this?

1. Some money comes from the sale of CDs of the book, but as

we don't sell large numbers of these, especially the more

esoteric ones, that doesn't cover all of the costs.

(Where CD sales can cover the costs, then the book is not

put up for adoption).

2. Some money comes from the person or people who adopt the book.

The scheme has only just started. The pages for the scheme will be

changing very regularly!

Further details can be seen at:

http://www.archivecdbooks.org/adopt/index.html

OTHER NEWS SNIPPETS

At the end of January I made another visit to the Cumbria Record Offices

at Carlisle and Barrow in Furness. I returned the last batch of books

that were borrowed, gave them lots of CDs, and came away with some more

boxes full of books. Some really interesting ones amongst them.

On Monday, Anya and I will be visiting the Brewhouse Yard Museum in

Nottingham, in connection with the new adopt-a-book scheme. We also have

a rather special book to donate to them too. An incredibly rare first

edition of the Nottingham Date Book (1852) - only three known copies are

in existence, and this copy is in just about perfect original condition.

We have had a special flip-lid preservation box made for it. But what

makes this particular book even more special, is that it came from the

personal library of Jesse Boot (yes, the founder of Boot's The Chemist)

a Nottingham man who first started his business there. What more fitting

a place to hold it than Nottingham's museum of social history - The

Brewhouse Yard Museum. A place where it will be owned by the people of

the City of Nottingham, and preserved for the future.

If you have ancestors in Nottingham, or just happen to be visiting the

city sometime, then I can thoroughly recommend a visit to the Brewhouse

Yard Museum, sited at the foot of the Castle Rock, and within a stone's

throw (it's next door!) of the fascinating Trip to Jerusalem Inn which

is embedded into the sandstone rock face. It's one of the very earliest

surviving pubs in England. We'll be there on Monday lunch time.

Regards

Rod
